Grolsch & Brouwersnös brew a unique beer together for the Battle of Grolle
After Kloeck Volck in 2019, Dulcken will now follow
On October 21, 22 and 23, the Slag om Grolle (‘Battle for Grolle’) will take place in Groenlo. Especially for this occasion, brewers Koninklijke Grolsch and Brouwersnös have joined forces for a collabbrew. Today, the brewers are jointly launching the beer from 't Brouwersnös in Groenlo. The beer, christened Dulcken by participants of the accompanying contest, is a brown beer with candy.
Mathijs Dulcken
The beer's name was chosen through a social media campaign organized by the brewers and Slag om Grolle. Participants could choose between 3 different names, each with its own story. Dulcken was the undisputed favorite with more than 60% of the votes.
The beer is named after Mathijs Dulcken, the former city commander of fortress Grolle. On July 18, 1627, Dulcken was sitting quietly at table with a few guests when it was reported that Prince Frederick Hendrick's army was in front of the city. The commander reacted to this news in a very levelheaded way: he finished his dinner, emptied his glass of beer, and only then did he rush to the ramparts to prepare Grolle for the possibility of a siege. Not long after the siege began, he was hit in the shoulder by a musket bullet. Defending his city against such a large force; that man deserves a beer!
Authentic and Combative
Dulcken is a brown beer with candy inspired by the past. In the 17th century, people were drinking beer as early in the day as breakfast. As the day progressed, those who could afford it drank heavier and more nutritious beer, such as a brown ale. It is even claimed that the victory over the Spaniards during the Eighty Years' War was financed largely with beer excise taxes.
Master brewer Marc Janssen: "Dulcken is a brown beer, brewed with various dark malts. It is an authentic beer style with a combative character. In fact, we also used 'Warrior hops'. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.6%. The addition of a touch of Candy provides a pleasant aftertaste".
Incidentally, this is not the first time Grolsch and Brouwersnös have worked together. At the previous edition of the Slag om Grolle, the brewers, who’s roots both lie in Groenlo, also joined forces, to brew a Saison called 'Kloeck Volck'.
