Grolsch & Municipality of Enschede 'Flip the switch too'!
What are you doing to save energy?
It's no news that energy prices are high. Especially now that the weather is getting colder, and with rising costs and energy shortages due to the war in Ukraine, Dutch people are eager to save on their energy consumption. This is why the Rijksoverheid (‘central government’) has re-launched its "Zet ook de knop om" campaign (‘Flip the switch too’) nationwide. In downtown Enschede, the campaign kicked off tonight with the handing out of the first Grolsch campaign coasters by Enschede alderman Jeroen Diepemaat.
Today Royal Grolsch and the Municipality of Enschede are activating the 'Flip the switch' campaign in Enschede's city center. The energy saving campaign was launched nationwide in April and is now being renewed. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about gas and energy consumption among households and businesses.
Enschede joins in
In the coming weeks, the campaign will be visible both online and in various Grolsch catering outlets in the city center, through specially designed coasters, table cards and a social media campaign. The first campaign felts were handed out this evening by Jeroen Diepemaat, Enschede alderman, and Koert van 't Hof, Corporate Affairs Director Koninklijke Grolsch. Joris Eleveld, chairman of the Vereniging Horeca Stad Enschede (on-trade Enschede association), was pleased to receive them. Jeroen Diepemaat: "We live in times of high energy prices and major tasks in the field of sustainability. It is important for all of us to consume less and reduce energy costs. As a municipality, we naturally help our residents where we can. We do this in many different ways. And in this case by drawing attention to this national campaign. After all, awareness is extremely important. As a municipality we are therefore very happy that a large Enschedean company supports this initiative."
Koert van 't Hof: "When it comes to saving energy, there is no single solution: it's multiple measures that together create a big effect. We also see this in our own transition to a CO2-neutral brewery, and is also the strength of the 'Turn the switch' campaign. It is the sum that counts. By supporting the Municipality of Enschede in this campaign, we are together setting a good example. We hope that more companies and households will see the opportunity to take energy-saving measures."
Practical saving tips
Of all the energy consumed by a household, about eighty percent is gas and about twenty percent is electricity. Both the campaign’s website,
www.zetookdeknopom.nl, and the coasters and table cards list practical tips that households and businesses can use to reduce this consumption. The website also shows how much an average household will save if the measures are applied. Some of the tips include:
- Set the thermostat to 15 degrees in the evening
- Turn off the second (beer) fridge, and put your beer outside to chill it
- Hang you laundry instead of using the dryer
- Install radiator foil
- Buy a water-saving shower head
Contest: How do you flip the switch?
Part of the campaign is a contest organized by Grolsch. Via table tickets and a social media campaign, the brewery is calling on people to share practical energy-saving tips of their own. Tips can be submitted by responding to posts on social media, or directly via 'direct message' (DM) to Grolsch's Instagram account (@Grolsch_NL). The best tips will have a chance to win nice & warm Grolsch prizes!
