Beer brewer Grolsch takes the next step towards becoming a net-zero brewery with the commissioning of an E-boiler

01 July 2026

On Wednesday 1 July, Grolsch will officially commission a new electric boiler (E-boiler), marking an important step forward in the brewery’s ongoing sustainability efforts. With this innovation, Grolsch will largely switch from natural gas to electricity for steam production, an essential part of the brewing process.

The E-boiler will not only help Grolsch further reduce the environmental impact of its own operations, but also contribute to a better balance on the electricity grid. By making flexible use of available renewable energy, the brewery will actively help reduce grid congestion.

The commissioning of the E-boiler supports Grolsch’s ambition to achieve Net Zero at its brewery. Significant progress has already been made in the energy transition in recent years. Since 2020, the brewery has been powered entirely by green electricity from wind energy. In 2022, waste heat from Twence and a biogas upgrading installation were introduced. In 2024, a large solar roof was commissioned to support, among other things, electric logistics. In addition, a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) ensures that the brewery is supplied with electricity generated by solar farms.

Thanks to these measures, Grolsch has already reduced its CO₂ emissions by 82% since 2019.

Making smart use of renewable energy

With the new E-boiler, Grolsch is taking another step towards phasing out natural gas. The installation makes it possible to generate steam using electricity and store it for later use. This takes place particularly when there is a surplus of renewable electricity available on the grid.

Impact on further CO₂ reduction

The use of the E-boiler will have a significant impact on the brewery’s remaining CO₂ emissions. Grolsch expects this step to reduce its current emissions by a further approximately 70%.

Step by step towards Net Zero

By commissioning the E-boiler, Grolsch reaffirms its long-term ambition to operate entirely at Net Zero. Through continuous investment in innovative and sustainable solutions, the brewery is taking further steps towards future-proof production.

Grolsch is working globally to reduce the climate impact of its operations and value chain. The company aims to achieve Net Zero across its own brewery operations and direct energy supply by 2030. For the entire value chain, including raw materials, packaging, logistics and distribution, Grolsch is targeting Net Zero by 2040.
